"WOW!", was the admiring opening comment of Lord (Chris) Patten, the University’s Chancellor, as he began chairing the discussion following this year’s Newman lecture given on 6 March by Professor Lisa Sowle Cahill. In his exclamation the Chancellor was summing up the warm acclamation accorded to Professor Cahill’s masterly presentation by a large appreciative audience.
The annual Newman Lecture is sponsored and presented in turn by the three Catholic Halls of Oxford University, the Benedictine St Benet’s Hall, the Dominican Blackfriars and the Jesuit Campion Hall; and this year Campion presented the lecture and the following reception in the splendidly equipped Pichette Auditorum of neighbouring Pembroke College.
