Rev'd Gerard Ryan, SJ was born in June 1976 in Tipperary, Ireland. He is the fourth member of a family of six boys. His parents and five brothers (with their respective families) live in southern Ireland. Gerard lived at L' Arche Daybreak, Toronto, from 1999-2002. He entered the Jesuits in 2002, and he is a member of the English Canada Province. Prior to arriving at Oxford, Gerard completed his undergraduate degree in English Literature, a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Theology (to be awarded at 2015 Convocation of Regis College), at the University of Toronto. His thesis considered theological questions of solidarity, and his thesis was supervised by Professor Thomas E. Reynolds, Emmanuel College, University of Toronto. Gerard arrived at Campion Hall in October, 2014. His doctorate examines recognition theory and its potential contribution to a theological praxis of love, particularly in light of the theology of Johann Baptist Metz. Gerard's supervisor is Professor Werner Jeanrond, Master of St. Benet's Hall, University of Oxford. He enjoys running, reading literature, visiting with friends, and given his closer proximity to Ireland, he enjoys spending time with his family and his eight nieces and four nephews. He is also known to enjoy the odd pint of Guinness in some of the local public houses in Oxford.
